About Us

The Taiwan Association for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology (LMPST Taiwan) is the local Taiwan chapter of the Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology (DLMPST) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST). Having its predecessor organization originated in 1960, it was established in February 2021 as a registered non-profit organization. The current board members are all local professors or researchers from related fields.

The association’s mission is to stimulate LMPST-related research, namely areas that fit the general label of ‘scientific philosophy’, including logic, philosophy of science, science and technology studies (STS), philosophy of social science, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and other fields of study.

The current objectives of the association are:

Professional academic work: To establish and optimize academic groups and to provide group support for academic work. Relevant work includes local and international academic exchange, sharing academic thoughts and experiences, and providing opportunities to publish academic output.

Interdisciplinary work: To build bridges between philosophers and experts in other fields (scientists, humanities scholars, artists). The targets are to increase the knowledge of relevant experts in the field of LMPST, and to create exchange opportunities and platforms.

Popularization of Philosophy: To increase public visibility of LMPST-related research. The targets are to promote relevant knowledge, to raise public awareness of the local professional community, and to provide a platform for interaction with the public.

The association also organizes The Taiwan Metaphysics Colloquium Series (TMCs) and The Taiwan Philosophical Logic Colloquium Series (TPLCs). Both conference series were previously hosted by the National Taiwan University Philosophy Department and, in previous years, have invited many renowned local and international scholars, including David Charles, Max J. Cresswell, Dorothy Edgington, Pascal Engel, Hartry Field, Robert Goldblatt, Alan Hayek, Jennifer Hornsby, Christian List, Hiroakira Ono, Daniel Stoljar, and Timothy Williamson. Following the conference series, multiple international anthologies have been published, including a Logic in Asia (LIAA) book series and a special issue of the leading international journal Synthese, receiving consistent praise from academic circles. Beginning in 2021, these two conference series are hosted by LMPST Taiwan.
